LOLIN / WEMOS · ESP8266
LOLIN D1 Mini (ESP8266)
The veteran: a small, very cheap Wi-Fi board with a huge shield ecosystem. Still great for simple jobs, but the ESP32-C3 has largely replaced it.

Pros
- Dirt cheap and tiny
- Lots of D1-mini shields (relay, OLED, SD…)
- Plenty of tutorials from the early IoT days
Cons
- Only one 10-bit ADC input (0–1 V!)
- No Bluetooth, little RAM
- Aging platform — new features land on ESP32 first
Best use cases
- 01Simple relay and switch controllers
- 02Wi-Fi temperature loggers
- 03Budget MQTT nodes
- 04Using up your old shield collection
